AIRBOX 2003 -2006

Airbox is a multi-media installation with a monochromatic mobile bunker as a center piece, supported by instructional drawings, protective gas masks, a video documenting the assembly sequence of the mobile bunker and original sound score by Beau Velasco.
Airbox is an attempt to create a functional life-protection system. The exterior shell is easily recognizable as a replica of a shipping container, a utilitarian form that has been perfected for transportation. The user enters the bunker through a decontamination room into a living space, which houses an air-purification system, a utility station and a lavatory. The mobile bunker made of semi-transparent corrugated plastic (polypropylene), blurs the boundary between privacy and public scrutiny. The whole structure is composed of small, modular units. The materials used for the interior artifacts -white foam core, white cardboard and clear vinyl- create the impression of an austere, isolated and sterile environment.
